Invasive weed optimization?
I saw a post on the genetic programming list, I think, on a "new" kind of optimization algorithm called, get this, invasive weed optmization. I know nothing about the crux of what's being done or claimed for IWO, but it seems to me we've seen this sort of thing before. It's almost a recipe:
- Take a GA or some other form of EC
- Twiddle with the operators a bit
- Give it a new name
- Declare yourself a pioneer of our computational age.
I suppose I should read up on what IWO really is before publicly displaying my skepticism, but I haven't gotten too excited by other recent incarnations (particles, swarms, insects, etc.) of population-oriented GEC variants. At least not enough to give them status separate from genetic and evolutionary computation broadly conceived.
