Google Ads and genetic algorithms

Philipp Lenssen at blogscoped wonders if Google Ads could be using genetic algorithms to allow the software to figure out what Ads to show to users.

I wonder, with that massive amount of ads + searches Google has, if there’s some merit in allowing the software to figure it out for itself… evolutionary algorithms, self-learning style. Search sessions are automatically grouped into general patterns, and then random ads are presented, and when an ad performs well, more ads from that ad segment will be displayed next time, and so on, causing a “survival of the fittest ad” environment. Then when Google meets the press in 2012, they can tell the journalists, “We don’t have a clue anymore how our ads work, but click-throughs are higher than ever.”

After modifying the web site look a few months ago, we’ve moved the Illinois Genetic Algorithm Laboratory website to the latest version of WordPress to simplify user management, facilitate updates, and improve security. Noriko Imafuji Yasui takes best paper at ICEIS

IlliGAL postdoc Noriko Imafuji Yasui (and her coauthors Llora, Goldberg, Washida & Tamura) took the best paper award at the 9th International Conference on Enterprise Information Systems (ICEIS 2007) in Portugal last week. The paper Delineating Topic and Discussant Transitions in Online Collaborative Environments is available in pdf format here.

Motley Fool gets history of GAs wrong

Apparently, GAs were invented at the Santa Fe Institute, according to a blog post by Anders Bylund (here) about Comac McCarthy on Oprah:

Traditional economics mixed with chaos theory and particle physics to produce Brian Arthur's economic law of increasing returns. Evolutionary theory plus computer science spawned the discipline of evolutionary computing and genetic algorithms at the institute. And so its goes.

No, so it doesn't go. Forerunners of modern GAs were around in the 50s, and SFI didn't have (and hasn't had) much to do with GAs at all, in fact. But it also sounds good, and it is probably the only way to get "genetic algorithms" and Oprah mentioned in the same blog post.
