The next ETC series speaker is engineering anthropologist, Gary Downey from Virginia Tech. He will speak on the topic Are Globalization, Diversity, and Leadership Variations of the Same Problem? Moving Problem Definition to the Core (see here). Downey is author of The Machine in Me: An Anthropologist Sits Among Engineers and Cyborgs and Citadels: Anthopological Interventions in Emerging Sciences and Technology. Join us for what promises to be an important presentation.

Kavita Philip, faculty member at UC irvine and author of Civilizing Natures: Race, Resources, and Modernity in Colonial South India (Rutgers 2004) will give a talk, “Producing Technoscientific Knowledge and Gendered Subjects: Notes on Studying South Indian Regional Modernities.” The talk will be held Monday, January 29, 2007 at 3:00pm in 106 Lincoln Hall with a reception thereafter at the Gender and Women’s Studies Building, 911 S. Sixth St. (via Sharra Vostral)

Billy Koen, University of Texas at Austin mechanical engineering
professor, will kick off the Engineering, Technology & Culture Lecture Series (see here) from 12 noon-1 pm in B02 Coordinated Science Lab (CSL), giving a talk from his work in the philosophy of engineering. Professor Koen is author of Discussion of the Method: Conducting the Engineer’s Approach to Problem Solving (Oxford, 2003), and the lecture defines engineering method and generalizes it to universal method.
