Resources for scienfitic presentations
2 April 2007GECCO is coming up soon and it means it is time to prepare presentation slides and posters. I was looking around for pointers for making good slides and posters and found very good ones. Many of the guidelines were for business presentations, but I also found quite a few of them for scientific presentations:
- Resources for scientific presentations: An excellent compilation of useful resources for scientific presentations by C. S. Weiler at Whitman college.
- Present, Don’t Speak by David E. Goldberg, Chapter 9 of The Entrepreneurial Engineer. [Download PPT]
- Scientifically speaking - Tips for preparing and delivering scientific talks and using visual aids [Download PDF]: The PDF is definitely worth a read.
- Advice on designing scientific posters by Colin Purrington at Swarthmore college. I found the advice of putting the poster on flickr and asking for review kind of neat. Also suggests searching for templates using Google search, and PhDposters.com.
- Block, S. (1996). The DOs and DON’Ts of poster presentation. Biophysical Journal 71:3527-3529.
- How to give successful oral and poster presentations by J. W. Niemantsverdriet.
- The art of scientific communication: Using power point effectively by W. C. Dennison, A. Jones and T. Saxby.
- Effective presentations by Jeff Radel. Also see his 21-page guided tour.
- Signal-to-Noise ratio and the elimination of the nonessential by Garr Reynolds.
- Slide design: signal vs. noise (redux) by Garr Reynolds
- How to get a standing ovation by Guy Kawasaki.
- Plea from a symposium goer by D. H. Janzen.
- How real scientists give talks by J. D. Mann (updated by K. R. Sharrock)
- Mortal sins in oral presentations or how to give a talk if you never want to talk again by T. G. Walcott.
- Oral presentation advice by M. D. Hill.
- Presenters university.
- Foote, A. L. (2002). How we present our science: Tips for students. Society of Wetland Scientists Bulletin 19(3): 13-16.
