Support for WPE-2007 student travel

Limited support for student travel is available for student participants in WPE-2007 due to a grant from Deere & Company.  Students with accepted abstracts should prepare a brief travel budget, including workshop registration fee.  List other sources of support, including that provided by home departments and other organizations.

Send your request to deg@uiuc.edu and specify the amount requested to support your travel.  Due to limited amounts of funding, students cannot rely solely on the support of the workshop.

Call for papers extended

Due to a number of requests and summer vacation schedules, the call for papers (1-2 page extended abstracts) has been extended until 1 September 2007.  The extended call for papers may be downloaded here.   The notification of acceptance date has been pushed back until 24 September.

Final call for papers posted

The final call for papers for the 2007 Workshop on Philosophy and Engineering has bee posted (download here). The deadline for submission of 1-2 page extended abstracts is two weeks from today, 17 August 2007.

WPE-2007 Affiliates with ASEE & SPT

Agreement was reached today for the 2007 Workshop on Philosophy and Engineering to be an affiliated event of (1) The Society for Philosophy and Technology and (2) The American Society for Engineering Education Ethics Division. Members of either of these organizations will be able to attend WPE at a discounted rate to the regular registration fees.

WPE-2007 Program Posted

A tentative program for the Workshop on Philosophy & Engineering (WPE-2007) has been posted over here.  As invited speakers titles and abstracts come in, they will be posted at the “program” tab.

WPE-2007 organizing committee expands

In anticipation of a larger-than-expected number of submissions, the organizing committee of the Workshop on Philosophy and Engineering (29-31 October 2007, Monday-Wednesday, TUDelft) or WPE-2007 welcomes new organizing committee members, Mark Bedau (Reed College & Protolife), Ron Chrisley of the University of Sussex, Gene Moriarty of San Jose State University, and Bryon Newberry of Baylor University.

4 invited speakers confirmed

Four invited speakers have been confirmed for the Workshop on Philosophy and Engineering (WPE-2007):

  1. Louis L. Bucciarelli (MIT), author of Designing Engineers & Engineering Philosophy
  2. Alastair Gunn (University of Waikato), co-author of Engineering, Ethics, and the Environment.
  3. Jun Fudano (Kanazawa Institute of Technology), Director of the Applied Ethics Center for Engineering and Science (AECES).
  4. Natasha McCarthy (Royal Academy of Engineering), Policy Advisor, Engineering Policy (with discussion by Peter Kroes, TUDelft, co-author of Between Science and Technology and Technological Developement and Science in the Industrial Age).

As other speakers are confirmed they will be announced on this web site.

WPE Call for Papers released

The 2007 Workshop on Philosophy & Engineering (WPE-2007), TUDelft, 29-31 October 2007 (Monday-Wednesday) has issued a call for papers here. 1-2 page extended abstracts are due by 17 August 2007 to deg@uiuc.edu.
