LCS researcher changes jobs

Most people who know me will be aware that I am changing job shortly. I will be leaving the University of Bath from 30th September 2007, and will no longer be an academic. I am moving to Street in Somerset to become the Pastor of Street Baptist Church. I am still happy to answer any questions relating to my previous research, so do feel free to contact me via my new email address, which is linked from this site.

Kumara’s PhD defense

Kumara has just defended his Ph.D. thesis “Genetic Algorithms and Genetic Programming for Multiscale Modeling: Applications in Materials Science and Chemistry and Advances in Scalability”. Live from The Engineer of the Future

I am sitting at the workshop on the Engineer of the Future hosted at NCSA. The workshop is part of the ETSI lecture series organized by Michael Loui and David E. Goldberg. The talks so far are very interesting. Hard to highlight all the relevant points, but I would like to mention the experience Sherra E. Kerns is sharing about their experience at Olin College. The engagement with the curriculum that students show is very remarkable. She mentioned current established curricula tend to kill innovation (and engagement). That comment resonate with my personal experience freshmen was always more rewarding and challenging than last year students.

Vacations and GECCO were great. I am still trying to catch up. Hope everything gets up to speed soon. Just a quick note to jump start: Dealing with relational databases, metadata stores, DAV servers? If so, take a look at Virtuoso, you won’t be disappointed

GECCO 2007 Hat Trick

Yup, never happened to me before. In John Koza’s words: Hat Trick, best paper in EDA track and two Bronze medals in the HUMIES competition. I just think that I was lucky and blessed to have the pleasure to work with such great people. It would not have happened if it wasn’t for them. Below you can find some of the presentations for the above Hat Trick, as well as some other work I presented on genetics-based machine learning.
